According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, Pakistan coal imports have increased 23% on the month to 1,063,807 MT in Jan’18, compared with 868,393 MT in Dec’17.
On the yearly basis, Coal import had recorded enormous growth of 196% compared with 359,580 MT in Jan’17.
Major Coal Receivers:
During Jan’18, Pakistan had witnessed higher coal buying, especially from the power and cement sector.
Port Qasim Electric power received the highest coal shipment of 204,350 MT in Jan’18, the company had not imported any coal shipment in Dec’17. Similarly, FFBL power had returned to the import market after a one month gap to procure 54,860 MT coal.
However, Pakistan’s major coal importer, Huaneng Shandong Ruyi, operator of the Sahiwal power plant, has seen its import falling to 39,150 MT in Jan’18 from 128,140 MT in Dec’17.
Bestway Cement, Lucky Cement, Cherat Cement, Pioneer Cement and Fauji Cement were among the major cement companies that had imported coal during the month.

Major Coal Exporters:
South Africa had exported 687,640MT coal to Pakistan in Jan’18, down 15% M-o-M compared with 808,483 MT in Dec’17.
Indonesia had witnessed substantial increase in coal supplies, as exports to Pakistan had risen 444% M-o-M to 325,667 MT. Coal shipment of 50,500 MT from the US was also seen during the month.
