Anglo American: Kumba Iron Ore Production Increased 8% in CY’17

The Anglo American Kumba iron ore production for the year CY’17 increased by 8% to 45 MnT owing to improved productivity as against 41.5 MnT in CY’16. The fourth quarter results in CY’17 witnessed a marginal decline of 3% to 11.6 MnT as against Q4 CY’16 at 11.9 MnT. The Q-o-Q witnessed marginal increase from 11.5 MnT in Q3 CY’17 to 11.6 MnT in Q4 CY’17.

1. The decrease in quarterly production was owing to reduced production from Sishen iron ore mine, to 7.8 MnT, down 8% as against 8.5 MnT in Q4 CY’16. However, the waste removal increased by 15% to 43 MnT, due to improvement in mining productivity. The CY’17 production for the mine witnessed at 31.1 MnT, up 10% as compared to 28.4 MnT in CY’16.
2. The production from Kolomela witnessed an increase of 12% to 3.9 MnT in Q4 CY’17 as against 3.4 MnT in Q4 CY’16. The total CY’17 production at Kolomela recorded at 13.9 MnT, up 9% as against 12.7 MnT in CY’16.

Minas-Rio iron ore production moved up by 4% – The Minas Rio iron ore, Brazil witnessed a decline in production in Q4 CY’17 of 19% to 4 MnT as compared to Q4 CY’16 at 4.9 MnT due to expected lower grade ore. The Q-o-Q witnessed a decline of 5% in Q4 CY’17 production as against 4.2 MnT in Q3 CY’17. However, the Y-o-Y production witnessed an increase in the total iron ore production in CY’17 to 16.8 MnT, up 4% as against CY’16 at 16.1 MnT.

The total sales volume from Anglo American Kumba iron ore recorded at 12.23 MnT (11.35 MnT for exports and 0.88 MnT domestic sales) in Q4 CY’17, a slight decline as against 10.93 MnT in Q4 CY’16. The total sales in CY’17 from Kumba mines recorded increase of 6% Y-o-Y to 44.9 MnT as against 42.5 MnT in CY’16

However, the total sales (export of pellet feed) from Minas-Rio mines recorded at 4.1 MnT in Q4 CY’17, down 13% as against 4.8 MnT in Q4 CY’16. The Y-o-Y sales depicted a marginal increase from 16.2 MnT in CY’16 to 16.5 MnT in CY’17.
