India: Power Utilities’ Coal Import Down 7% M-o-M in Dec’17

Indian power plant’s coal imports have recorded a decline of 7% M-o-M to 4.827 MnT in Dec’17, according to the data provided by Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Power utilities had imported 5.165 MnT coal in Nov’17.

Adani Power (Mundra), Coastal Gujarat, Semb Corp Gayathri Power, JSW Energy and IL & FS power plant were the major coal receivers during the month.

Plant-wise Break-up of Coal Imports:

Out of the total imported quantity, power plants which run on domestic coal had acquired 1.705 MnT coal for blending purpose, while the plants based on imported coal had acquired the remaining amount of 3.122 MnT coal.

Imports by Plants Designed on Domestic Coal:
Coal imported for blending purpose by power plants  had hit 6-months high of 1.705 MnT in Dec’17, up 16% M-o-M from 1.472 MnT in Nov’17. The major growth in imports was seen from the private sector plants, which had recorded their highest monthly total for FY18 in Dec’17.

Private power plants’ imports was 1.539 MnT in Dec’17. Central sector power plants had also witnessed an increase of 76% M-o-M in coal imports to 0.037 MnT, whereas import from the State-run power plants had dropped 43% on the month to 0.129 MnT in Dec’17.

Imports by Plants Designed on Imported Coal:
Total coal import by plants designed to run on Imported coal had declined 15% on the month to 3.122 MnT in Dec’17.

Private sector plants had received 3.025 MnT coal in Dec’17, down 15% M-o-M from 3.54 MnT in Nov’17. Also, the state-run Sikka power plant which uses imported coal for its 500 MW unit, had acquired 0.097 MnT coal, which was 37% lower on the month compared with 0.153 MnT in Nov’17.

Indian power plants have imported 43.167 MnT coal during the Apr’17-Dec’17 period.
