Mongolia Coal Exports

Mongolian Coal Export Increase 28% Y-o-Y in CY17

According to the trade data provided by Mongolian customs, the country has exported 28% more coal during CY17 (Jan’17-Dec’17) than they had managed in CY16.

Coal exports from Mongolia stood 32.99 MnT in CY17 against 25.71 MnT in CY16. The country’s export had been benefited from the ban imposed by the Chinese Government on the imports of North Korean coal. As a result, Chinese buyers’ had turned towards Mongolian coal market to meet their share of coal demand.

Mongolia had already surpassed its coal export total of CY16 in Oct’17; however, the trend of exports had been dissimilar during the two halves of the year CY17.

Exports during the first half of the year CY17 was nearly doubled than the exports recorded during the same period previous year, registered at 18.95 MnT during Jan’17-Jun’17. On the other hand, Exports during the second half had fallen 26% to 14.02 MnT during Jul’17-Dec’17, which were also 13% lower on the year compared with 16.13 MnT coal recorded during Jul’16-Dec’16 period.

The drop in exports during the second half was attributed to the issues at the border with China, Mongolia’s largest coal customer. Since, the coal movement from Mongolia to China is mainly done through roadways; hence in the period of strong coal demand, the customs on both sides of the border were unable to handle the heavy traffic of coal carrying trucks.

The long queue of trucks thus had affected coal exports from Mongolia. At the moment, the border has capacity to let through 700 trucks a day. However, in order to ease off the pressure the target has been raised to 3000 trucks per year for this year.
