India: Coal Traffic Handled at Major Ports Up 15% M-o-M in Dec’17

According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have increased 15% on the month to 14.103 MnT in Dec’17 against 12.274 MnT in Nov’17.

The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.

During the month of Dec’17, the major ports had witnessed growth in imports of both thermal and metallurgical grades of coal.

Increased demand from both Power and Non-power sector has continued to support import of Thermal and Steam grades of coal, which had increased 9% M-o-M to 9.196 MnT in Dec’17 compared with 8.421 MnT in Nov’17.

Whereas, Coking & other coal grades’ import had also increased in Dec’17 after falling for the previous two months. The restocking demand for Indian steelmakers ahead of the Australian holidays had resulted in the growth of 27% M-o-M in Coking and other grades of coal.

Paradip port had handled the highest coal shipments during Dec’17, which was also the highest receiver of thermal and steam grade of coal. Highest shipment of Coking and other grade of coal were received at Kolkata port.

Coal Shipments in FY18:
Total coal shipments handled at the major ports were down 2% Y-o-Y to 104.426 MnT during Apr’17-Dec’17, compared with 106.986 MnT in Apr’16-Dec’16.

Despite recording growth in recent months, Total Thermal & Steam coal imports have fallen 6% Y-o-Y to 66.679 MnT during Apr’17-Dec’17, compared with 70.763 MnT coal shipments recorded during the same period in FY17.

Coking & Other coal grades’ import registered growth of 4% during the same period (Apr’17-Dec’17) to 37.747 MnT.

Paradip had handled the highest coal quantity of 29.591 MnT during Apr’17-Dec’17, which was also the highest receiver of both the thermal and metallurgical coal grades. Other major coal receiving ports during the period were- Ennore, Visakhapatnam, Kolkata and Kandla.

JNPT and Chennai ports have not received a single coal shipment during FY18.
