As per recently released customs data, United States has crossed 4 MnT imports of ferrous scrap during Jan-Nov’17. United States imported 4.02 MnT ferrous scrap during Jan-Nov’17 which is 21% Y-o-Y higher against 3.33 MnT ferrous scrap imports recorded during the same time frame in the last year. During CY16, United States imported total 3.60 MnT ferrous scrap.
Domestic steel prices in America increased since May’17 and remained on the higher side. High scrap imports would be the result of hike in steel prices.
United States witnessed significant fall in its monthly ferrous scrap imports in Nov’17, United States imported 0.28 MnT ferrous scrap with a decline of 22% M-o-M in Nov’17 as against 0.36 MnT ferrous scrap imported in Oct’17.Fall in scrap imports could be attributed to nil exports registered amid winters from major exporters like UK, Sweden and Japan in Nov’17.
However, in yearly comparison imports registered a marginal rise of 12% Y-o-Y in Nov’17 against 0.25 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Nov’16 to United States.
United States is world’s fourth-largest importer of ferrous scrap after Turkey, South Korea and India.
Top unloading ports in United States for scrap import activities were Detroit, New Orleans, Seattle, Charleston, and Buffalo.
Canada remained top supplier of ferrous scrap to United States –
Canada supplied highest 0.23 MnT ferrous scrap to United States in Nov’17 followed by Netherland and Mexico which supplied 0.03 MnT and 0.02 MnT ferrous scrap respectively. While other major exporters like United Kingdom, Sweden and Japan remained silent with nil exports to United States in Nov’17.
During Jan-Nov’17, Canada exported highest 2.80 MnT ferrous scrap to United States occupying 70% share of total ferrous scrap imports. United Kingdom remained second largest exporter to United States with 0.43 MnT ferrous scrap exports followed by Mexico (0.25 MnT), Sweden (0.21 MnT), Netherland (0.21 MnT) and Japan (0.07 MnT) respectively.
