Petcoke Imports in India Rise 56.72% in Dec’17 M-o-M

In India, Petcoke imports in Dec’17 were at around 1.05 MnT, which is a rise of around 56.72% over the imports in Nov’17.  The rise in the imports was mainly due to the surge in the import booking in Oct’17 after the refineries in USA had resumed operations after the Harvey hurricane incident. The imports were shipped in Dec’17. Also, on year-on-year comparison, the imports during the last month of 2017 were higher by around 17.98% against the imports of around 0.89 MnT in Dec’16.

Notably, Dec’17 was the only month in 2017 in which the imports overtook the imports in the corresponding month of the preceding year 2016. The underlying factor behind the month-wise imports in 2017 falling behind those in 2016 was the higher offers during 2017. Petcoke offers from the key international markets had remained considerably high during 2017 due to demand and supply issues.

The total imports during 2017, at 10.86 MnT, were also lesser by around 25.57% in comparison with the imports in 2016, at 14.59 MnT.

A country-wise break-up of the import origins during Dec’17 shows that imports from USA had increased; while, imports from the other countries had lessened.

Among the country’s port, the Krishnapatnam port had handled the highest volume of import traffic during the month; followed by the Vizag and Mundra ports.

The major importers during the month were: Ultratech Cement, Dalmia Cement, Ambuja Cement, India Cement, JSW Steel, Nirma, among others.
