Indian Pellet Exports Surge 67% in CY’17 On Strong Chinese Demand

According to the customs data maintained with SteelMint, Indian pellet exports have seen a marked rise of 67% Y-o-Y to 9.68 MnT as against 5.79 MnT in CY’16. Indian pellet exports have increased sharply this year amid increased Chinese demand post-Samarco disruption. It is to be noted that the pellet production from Samarco was 12.05 MnT and 12.31 MnT in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Post the Samarco disaster, Chinese steel mills shifted to India for pellet imports leading to increased exports from India. Also announced steel production cuts by Chinese govt.forced the steel mills to go for high-grade material (like pellets) resulting in improved pellet demand.

However, on monthly basis, Indian pellet exports have moved down 23% M-o-M to 0.89 MnT in Dec’17 compared to 1.16 MnT in Nov’17.  Buying offers from Chinese mills was witnessed at a lower level in Dec’17 as they were considering making pellets out of imported concentrates a more cost-effective measure.

China continues to be the largest importer of Indian pellet in CY’17 with imports of 8.18 MnT, up 62% as against 5.04 MnT in CY’16.  Oman stood the second largest importer at 0.45 MnT, followed by South Korea at 0.38 MnT and Japan at 0.29 MnT.

JSPL remains the largest Indian pellet exporter-:
JSPL stood the largest exporter for the duration of CY’17 with exports at 1.98 MnT, accounting for 20%share in total pellet exports from India. BRPL recorded exports at 1.79 MnT, followed by Essar Steel at 1.36 MnT, Rashmi Metaliks at 1.51 MnT , KIOCL at 1.43 MnT, Bagadiya Brothers at 0.84 MnT , and  Arya Iron & Steel at 0.53 MnT.

Paradeep port contributed highest exports at 0.48 MnT in Dec’17-:
Pellet exports from paradeep port recorded highest in Dec’17 at 0.48MnT, followed by Dhamra port at 21 MnT and Mangalore port at 0.11 MnT.
