Turkey: Coal Imports Up 7% M-o-M in Nov’17

According to the data provided by customs, Turkey has procured highest monthly coal shipment of CY17, with the imports of 4.58 MnT in Nov’17. Interestingly, the quantity recorded in Nov’17 is also the highest monthly coal import since CY10 (the period up to which CoalMint has maintained customs data).

Coal Import in Nov’17 was 7% higher on the month compared with 4.27 MnT in Oct’17. On the yearly basis, imports increased 2% compared with 4.48 MnT in Nov’16.

Total coal imported by Turkey stood 40.04 MnT during Jan’17-Nov’17 period, up 5% Y-o-Y compared with 38.01 MnT coal recorded during the same period last year. The country is all set to surpass its coal imports of 41.39 MnT recorded in CY16 (Jan’16-Dec’16).

 Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Imports of all the coal grades had increased during the month except Pet coke whose import fell 24% M-o-M to 0.29 MnT in Nov’17.

Non-Coking coal imports slightly increased from 3.39 MnT in Oct’17 to 3.42 MnT in Nov’17, while Coking coal imports rose 80% M-o-M to 0.72 MnT.

Major Coal Exporters:
Colombia and Russia have been the major coal exporter to Turkey in CY17, both these countries have also surpassed their respective coal exports of CY16.

Colombia monthly coal export stood 1.86 MnT in Nov’17, up 22% M-o-M compared with 1.52 MnT in Oct’17. On the yearly basis, exports increased 8% compared with 1.72 MnT in Nov’16.

Russian coal export to Turkey had hit highest for the year, marked at 1.59 MnT in Nov’17. Exports increased 3% M-o-M compared with 1.55 MnT in Oct’17 and were also 5% higher on the year compared with 1.52 MnT in Nov’16.

US, the third-largest coal exporter, had also witnessed growth in exports both on the monthly as well as on the yearly basis. The country had supplied 0.5 MnT coal to Turkey in Nov’17.

South Korea, Canada, Australia and China were the other major coal exporters during the month.
