South African Coal Exports Up 4% M-o-M in Nov’17

South African coal export has increased 4% M-o-M to 7.58 MnT in Nov’17 against 7.28 MnT in Oct’17, as per the data provided by country’s custom. On the yearly basis, exports were 3% down compared with 7.83 MnT in Nov’16.

South African coal market has witness renewed interest from its chief consumer India, where domestic coal availability has been affected in the recent months. Moreover, Improved buying from Pakistan and South Korea have also strengthened South African coal exports, as both these countries have already surpassed their total coal intake of 2016.

South African total coal exports during Jan’17-Nov’17 has increased 8% Y-o-Y to 75.61 MnT, in comparison with 69.69 MnT coal exports achieved during the same period last year. Eventually, the country is all set to cross its coal export total of 76.87 MnT recorded in CY16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
South Africa has been majorly exporting two coal grades namely Bituminous coal and Anthracite coal.

Export of Bituminous coal increased 5% M-o-M to 7.3 MnT, while Anthracite coal export fell 19% M-o-M to 0.17 MnT in Nov’17. Shipments of Pet coke and Met coke were also recorded during the month.

Quantity in MnT

Major Coal Importers:
India remained the top coal receiver from South Africa, with imports of 3.25 MnT in Nov’17. Imports had increased both on the monthly as well as on the yearly basis during the month.

Imports from India had recently improved amid the ongoing coal crunch in the domestic market; also the ban on Pet coke had also supported coal buying. Indian coal import during the last three months (Sep’17-Nov’17) has increased 7% to 10.26 MnT, in comparison to 9.63 MnT recorded during the same period last year.

Total South African coal imported by India in CY17 (till Nov) stood 32.68 MnT, down 9% Y-o-Y compared with the exports of 35.8 MnT in Jan’16-Nov’16.

South Korea replaced Pakistan to become the second-largest coal importer in Nov’17. South Korean coal imports increased 75% M-o-M to 1.26 MnT in Nov’17, which were also 26% higher on the year compared with 1 MnT in Nov’16.

Pakistan coal imports fell 24% M-o-M to 0.56 MnT in Nov’17, but were 6% higher on the year compared with 0.53 MnT in Nov’16.
