Japan, the second largest iron ore importer of the world imported 114.84 MnT iron ore, during Jan-Nov’17 down by 4% against same period last year which stood at 119.25 MnT. Japan’s crude steel output has fallen marginally to 95.94 MnT during Jan-Nov’17 compared to 96.06 MnT in the same time frame last year.
However, in Nov’17 Japan imported 10.74 MnT iron ore up 5% M-o-M as against 10.24 MnT in Oct’17. The Y-o-Y imports also witnessed a marginal increase of 4% in Nov’17 as compared to Nov’16 which stood at 10.28 MnT.
An agglomerated (pellets/concentrate) iron ore imports were down by 26% M-o-M to 1.34 MnT in Nov’17 as against 1.81 MnT in Oct’17. However, it has shown an increase of 15% Y-o-Y in Nov’17 as compared to Nov’16 which was 1.17 MnT.
The non-agglomerated (fines/lump) iron ore imports witnessed a rise of 12%, at 9.4 MnT in Nov’17 as compared to Oct’17 at 8.43 MnT. The Y-o-Y imports also depicted an increase in of 3% in Nov’17 as compared to Nov’16 which was recorded at 9.11 MnT.

Australia continues to remain the largest iron ore exporter to Japan in the month of Nov’17 with the total quantity of 5.82 MnT, down by 3% as compared to previous month, followed by Brazil at 3.26 MnT Canada at 0.52 MnT and South Africa 0.38 MnT.
