Bangladesh: 33,000 MT Bulk Scrap Import Vessel Reported at Port

According to customs data maintained with SteelMint, a bulk vessel ‘Camilla’ carrying 33,060 MT ferrous scrap from USA is expected to arrive at anchorage tomorrow (22nd Dec) in Chittagong port. As per sources, the upcoming vessel is likely booked by BSRM a leading steel mill in Bangladesh.

So far in Dec’17 (till 21 Dec’17), four bulk import vessels carrying the total quantity of 129,740 MT scrap arrived at berth. ‘Seiyo Explorer’ a bulk import vessel booked from Japan carrying 17,350 MT ferrous scrap is still seen at anchorage position in Chittagong port.

In Nov’17, bulk scrap import in Bangladesh was recorded highest so far CY17 at 177,950 MT. During Jan-Nov’17, Bangladesh has imported 872,004 MT scrap compared to 616,350 MT in the same time period last year which has increased by 42% during Jan-Nov’17.

Imported ferrous scrap offers rose sharply –

Current assessment from Australian origin Shredded in containers is around USD 390/MT, CFR for Feb’18 shipment and P&S from Brazil origin assessed at USD 370/MT, CFR Bangladesh against previous week’s assessment of USD 365/MT, CFR. Offers for UK origin Shredded 211 scrap in bulk cargo heard higher by USD 10-15/MT higher than present offer levels.

HMS 1&2 from other African countries offered at USD 335/MT while HMS 1&2 from Australia assessed at USD 357/MT Thus, offers have moved up by USD 5-10/MT on W-o-W basis.

Bangladesh steel mills have turned silent amid sharply rising prices. Most of the buyers are working with inventories available to them or preferring local ship breaking scrap against imported as the former is still cheaper. However major steel mills expect imported scrap buying to resume probably in Jan’18.

Prices for ship breaking remained mostly steady and strong but this week no significant sale reported in Bangladesh. The last prices assessed for shipbreaking was at USD 420/LDT for general cargo and USD 430/LDT for tanker cargoes CFR Bangladesh basis.
