According to the data provided by Russian customs, country’s coal exports have decreased 27% on the month to 12.79 MnT in Oct’17, against 17.59 MnT in Sep’17.
Coal exports have fallen after increasing successively for the two months since Jul’17, however Nov’17 exports were still 31% higher on the year compared with 9.77 MnT recorded in Oct’16.
Russian coal exports have totaled 148.11 MnT during Jan’17-Oct’17 period, which was 9% more than the total coal shipments of 135.41 MnT achieved during the same period in CY16.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Exports of the chief coal grades (Non-Coking coal, Coking coal and Anthracite) have fallen in the month. While Met coke and Pet coke shipments which are generally shipped in smaller quantity than the major coal grades, have recorded M-o-M growth in Oct’17.
Non-coking coal exports decreased 25% M-o-M to 9.88 MnT in Oct’17, whereas Coking coal exports were down 44% M-o-M to 1.24 MnT.
On the other hand, Met coke and Pet coke exports had recorded M-o-M growth of 61% and 14% respectively during the month.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
China was the top coal importer during the month. Chinese coal import rose 7% M-o-M to 2.05 MnT in Oct’17, which were also 97% higher on the year compared to 1.04 MnT in Oct’16.
In the meanwhile, China has also surpassed the previous years’ total coal sourcing from Russia, with imports of 17.88 MnT coal recorded during Jan’17-Oct’17. China had imported 16.08 MnT coal from Russia in CY16.
South Korean coal import of 1.8 MnT was marked second-highest during the month. Imports were down 9% M-o-M compared with 1.98 MnT in Sep’17, but were 21% higher on the year compared with 1.49 MnT in Oct’16.
Japanese coal import decreased 6% M-o-M to 1.43 MnT in Oct’17. On the yearly basis, Imports rose 12% compared with 1.28 MnT in Oct’16.

Russian Coal Imports:
Russian coal imports were recorded at 1.97 MnT during Oct’17, up 11% Y-o-Y from 1.78 MnT in Oct’16.
Total coal imports from the country has slightly fallen 2% Y-o-Y to 16.42 MnT during Jan’17-Oct’17, compared with 16.77 MnT during the corresponding period of the previous year.
Russia’s neighbouring country Kazakhstan has supplied highest coal quantity of 13.73 MnT in CY17.
