India: CG Based Units Increased Iron Ore Sourcing from NMDC by 36%

1. C.G. based units procured 57 rakes in Nov’17, up 36% M-o-M
2. JSW Steel’s sourcing from NMDC fell sharply in Nov’17
3. Movement for exports declined by 13% M-o-M

India’s largest iron ore miner, NMDC supplied 204 rakes of iron ore from Chhattisgarh mines  in Nov’17, an increase of 6% as against supply in Oct’17 which stood at 192 rakes. The miner had kept iron ore prices unchanged in Nov’17.

C.G. based units procurement increased by 36% in Nov’17: There was a marked increase in procurement of NMDC iron ore by 36% from 42 rakes in Oct’17 to 57 rakes in Nov’17. Limited supply and improved demand resulted in sharp hike in central India sponge iron prices. Monthly average C-DRI (80 FeM) prices in Raipur increased and stood at INR 18,430/MT in Nov’17 compared to INR 16,900/MT in Oct’17.

Procurement by outside C.G based units remained stable: The procurement by outside C.G. based units in Nov’17 maintained at 126 rakes, similar to that of Oct’17. After the K-K railway line was damaged in the rains in October’17, Vizag Steel has been facing difficulty in sourcing iron ore from NMDC’s mines. Owing to this, the Rayagada-Vizianagaram route is the only available option for RINL to procure material from Bailadila mines. The steel maker procured 84 rakes in Nov’17 as against 79 rakes in Oct’17.

JSW Steel, Dolvi procured only 9 rakes from NMDC in Nov’17 against 17 in previous month. KIOCL’s iron ore procurement from NMDC remained almost stable on monthly premises.

Movement for Exports decreased by 13%: NMDC’s exports decreased by 13% in Nov’17 to 21 rakes as against 24 rakes in Oct’17.
