Bangladesh is an emerging market and the import of steel and raw material plays an important role as the country is highly dependent on them. As per port vessel lineup data, total 23 bulk vessels discharged at Chittagong (Bangladesh) port in Nov’17 against 19 bulk vessels in Oct’17.
As per data maintained by SteelMint, major bulk import was seen in coal (10 vessels), scrap (7 Vessels) and HR Coil (6 vessels). Four vessels of scrap, four vessels of coal and one vessel of HR coil are at anchorage and expected to be discharged in December.
SteelMint Analysis
1. Bangladesh coal imports increased by 81% in Nov’17. Imports generally remained high during this period due to high demand from brick manufacturers.
2. Bulk scrap imports up by 44% in Nov’17. Bangladesh imported 177,950 MT in November against 123,450 MT in October. According to the port data, 4 vessels (totaled 129,740 MT) are at anchorage and likely to be discharged in December.
Due to heavy congestion and limited supply of bulk scrap cargoes, bulk scrap imports likely to fall in Dec’17 and Jan’18. Country imports around 1.7 MnT of scrap every year, out of which 40% is through bulk and 60% is through containers.
3. HR Coil imports to Bangladesh recorded at 59,900 MT which was 89,700 MT last month. Major imports were recorded from Japan (33,300 MT), India (13,500 MT), Taiwan (9,850 MT) and Vietnam (3,000 MT).
4. No bulks imports of HBI, steel billet and pig Iron were reported in November. One HBI vessel (48,850 MT) of Abul Khair from Russia is expected to get discharged in December.
5. Bangladesh port is facing huge congestion due to heavy imports of food grain.
