During Jan-Sept’17, BSRM remained the largest ferrous scrap importer with share of around 68% in Bangladesh’s bulk scrap imported so far.
Bangladesh – one of the world’s emerging steel markets, has witnessed significant hike in its ferrous scrap imports in this fiscal with rising steel capacities. As per recent data, in Q3 CY17 bulk scrap imports in country hiked more than three folds on Q-o-Q basis.
Bangladesh has Imported 294,605 MT bulk ferrous scrap in Q3 CY17 against 80,044 MT bulk ferrous scrap imported in Q2 CY17.
During Jan-Sept’17, Bangladesh imported total 12,69,777 MT ferrous scrap out of which 45% (563,657 MT) share was occupied by bulk imports while remaining 55% (706,120 MT) volumes were imported in containers.
Bangladesh scrap imports up 140% Y-o-Y in CY16 –During CY16, Bangladesh imported total 17,07,686 MT ferrous scrap with around 140% Y-o-Y hike against total 714,105 MT ferrous scrap imports in CY15. Surprisingly, in CY16 the scrap volumes imported in bulk vessels were almost seven folds higher than bulk scrap volumes imported in CY15.
The share of bulk scrap imports to Bangladesh increased sharply in CY16 – The share of bulk scrap imports to Bangladesh increased from 12% in CY15 to 38% in CY16 while that of containerized scrap imports declined from 88% in CY15 to 62% in CY17 in total ferrous scrap imports in Bangladesh.
Party-wise Bangladesh scrap imports – BSRM (Bangladesh Steel Re-rolling mill) has so far remained the largest ferrous scrap importer followed by Abul Khair Steel Melting Ltd.
In Sept’17, ferrous scrap imported in bulk vessels was 29,171 MT out of which 20,171 MT ferrous scrap was imported by importer Abul Khair Steel Melting Ltd at USD 308/MT. While 9,000 MT scrap was imported by BSRM steel Mills Ltd. at around USD 294/MT. United States remained largest supplier with 100% share in bulk scrap imports in Sept’17 to Bangladesh.
