According to the data provided by Indian Port Association, coal imports at country’s 12 major ports has fallen 8% Y-o-Y during FY18. Total coal import at the ports stood 78.049 MnT during Apr’17-Oct’17 against 84.73 MnT coal handled during Apr’16-Oct’16.
The 12 major ports of India include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia Dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.
During the Apr’17-Oct’17 period, Import of thermal and steam grade of coal has fallen 13% Y-o-Y to 49.062 MnT, compared with 56.243 MnT in Apr’16-Oct’16. Coking and other coal grades’ import has increased 2% to 28.987 MnT in the same period.
J.N.P.T. and Chennai ports have not received coal shipments in FY18. Out, of the remaining 10 ports, Paradip has handled highest coal import volume during Apr’17-Oct’17, however, Paradip and along with 5 other ports have witnessed fall in yearly coal shipments in FY18.

Coal Imports in Oct’17:
Monthly coal shipments at the ports has increased 14% M-o-M to 11.947 MnT in Oct’17. Given the robust demand for coal in power plants, Thermal and Steam coal imports were up 25% M-o-M to 7.749 MnT during the month.
Coking and other coal import had a minor fall of 2% from 4.279 MnT in Sep’17 to 4.198 MnT in Oct’17.
