Major Coal Importers:
Netherlands replaced Turkey to become the largest coal importer from Colombia in Aug’17.
Netherlands had imported 1.8 MnT coal during the month, which was 45% higher on the month compared with 1.24 MnT in Jul’17. On the yearly basis, coal import was down 34% Y-o-Y compared with 2.71 MnT in Aug’16.
Turkey’s monthly coal import fell 5% to 1.32 MnT in Aug’17, which was also 13% lower on the year compared with 1.51 MnT in Aug’16.
Despite the decline in imports during the month, Turkey still remained the largest coal importer in CY17. The country had witnessed an increase of 27% Y-o-Y in coal imports to 11.77 MnT during Jan’17-Aug’17. However, Turkeys’ share in Colombian coal export is likely to be affected as the Turkish Ministry has recently pled to minimize coal import in order to make full use of their domestic coal.
The largest improvement in coal imports was seen from Chile, who has now become the third largest coal importer of Colombian coal in CY17. The country has although imported mere 0.51 MnT coal in Aug’17; but has already surpassed its total coal import of CY16 during the month.
Total coal import from Chile stood 4.86 MnT during Jan’17-Aug’17, which is 12% higher than the import total of 4.35 MnT coal achieved during CY16(Jan’16-Dec’16).
