Indian power plant coal imports have recorded a minor growth of 1% M-o-M to 5.245 MnT in Oct’17, according to the data provided by Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Utilities had imported 5.173 MnT coal in Sep’17.
Coal imports have been continuously increasing due to the declining coal stock at the power plants, and have attained highest value since May’17. Total coal imported by the power utilities stood 33.625 MnT during Apr’17-Oct’17.
Adani Power (Mundra), Coastal Gujarat, JSW Energy, IL & FS power plant and Semb Corp Gayathri power were the major coal receivers during the month.
Plant-wise Break-up of Coal Imports:
Out of the total coal imported during the month, power plants which run on domestic coal acquired 1.422 MnT coal for blending purpose, while plants based on imported coal acquired 3.823 MnT.
Plants Designed on Domestic Coal:
Coal imported for blending purpose by power plants rose7% M-o-M to 1.422 MnT in Oct’17 compared with 1.329 MnT in Aug’17.
No coal was imported by the Central sector power utilities during the month. Whereas, only Gujarat State Electricity Corp (GSECL) and Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company (APPDCL) had imported coal in Oct’17 from the state sector. State sector plants had received 0.141 MnT coal, with an increase of 220% M-o-M.
Coal imported by Private sector power plants was 1.281 MnT in Oct’17, which had fallen marginally compared with 1.285 MnT in Sep’17.
Plants Designed on Imported Coal:
Coal import from plants based on imported coal dropped 1% M-o-M to 3.823 MnT in Oct’17 compared with 3.844 MnT in Sep’17.
Private sector power plants imports fell 3% M-o-M to 3.681 MnT, while the remaining coal was imported by Sikka power plant of state sector.
Coal Stock at Power Plants:
The decline in coal stock continued, as closing stock in Oct’17 fell to the lowest level of 12.224 MnT for FY18, against an opening stock of 13.01 MnT during the month.
Coal Stock in Oct’17 had dropped 53% from the closing stock of 25.76 MnT recorded at the end of Apr’17.
Power plants total coal receipt had increased 8% M-o-M to 50.571 MnT, while monthly consumption was 51.692 MnT in Oct’17.
