The impact of the shrinking Coking Coal and Iron Ore imports in China is showing. Demand for cargo vessels has slackened as imports of the commodities became lower due to the 50% steel production cut to be implemented in China from the third week of this month.
As the demand for cargo vessels is losing strength, the Baltic Dry Index is also traversing downwards. On 3Nov’17, the index was reported at 1,482 points, down from 1,546 points as on 27Oct’17.
However, there is prospect for the declinging demand for cargo vessels to be off-set by the likelihood of coal imports in India to increase due to the ban on Petcoke usage in Delhi/NCR, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Moreover, Coking Coal imports in India will escalate to substantial levels as buyers in India, who are waiting for the coal prices to recede to significant levels, will increase their imports in the near future.
