Pakistan: Coal Imports Up 16% M-o-M in Oct’17

According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, Pakistan’s Coal import has increased to 817,100 MT in Oct’17 against 702,559 MT in Sep’17, thus recording growth of 16% M-o-M.

On the yearly basis, Imports had surged 120% Y-o-Y compared with 371,800 MT of coal imports in Oct’16. So far Pakistan has imported 8,773,502 MT coal during the CY17(till Oct’17).

Country-wise Coal Imports:
Pakistan has sourced most of its coal from South Africa and Indonesia in CY17, along with smaller quantities coming from Russia and Mozambique.

However, during Oct’17 the country has imported coal from South Africa and Indonesia only. While coal imports from South Africa has fell 1% M-o-M to 602,280 MT, imports from Indonesia rose 125% on the month to 214,820 MT in Oct’17.

Major Coal Receivers:
Huaneng Shandong Ruyi, the operator of Pakistan’s first Supercritical Sahiwal power plant, had received the major coal imports in Oct’17. The company has imported 166,980 MT coal during the month.

According to the officials, coal for plant’s operation is being imported from South Africa and Indonesia. However once coal from Thar is available, the Indonesian coal would not be imported as it has efficiency similar as that of Thar coal.

Coal mining from Surface mine in block II of Thar Coal field having reserve of 3.8 MnT per year, is expected to start in 2018-19, as per the CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor)project status report.

Other major coal receivers during the month were: Port Qasim power, Lucky cement, Awan Trading, and Agro Trade.
